This house was constructed in the 1970s as a single story residence with very low insulation values. In 2006 the new owners embarked on a major renovation project and engaged Robert Burke Construction Ltd. to undertake the task. Conservation of energy was high on their agenda. Robert’s company is also a Soltherm trained contractor.

The Solution

The renovations were constructed in single skin masonry and Soltherm System 1 External Insulation System. The decision to use 100mm Soltherm P.I.R. Insulation Board, to achieve a U-Value of 0.20W/m2K, was chosen for its high thermal conductivity and track record as an insulation for external rendering requirements.

The 100mm Soltherm P.I.R. Insulation Board was mechanically fixed, to the masonry wall, with 150mm Soltherm Mechanical Fixings. The insulation was then coated with 3/4mm of Soltherm Adhesive Coat into which Soltherm Alkali Resistant Mesh was embedded to encapsulate the complete façade of the building. After initial set a second coat of Soltherm Adhesive Coat, 2/3mm was applied to provide an even substrate for the finish render.

Soltherm Classic Stone magnolia, one coat coloured through render at 15mm thickness, was chosen for its waterproofness and speed of application to give an aesthetic finish for the construction.
